The iCODE project offers middle school and high school students from Boston and Lowell a year-long enrichment experience, encompassing an after-school program and weekend events. Participating students will complete a range of hands-on engineering projects, featuring microcontroller platforms developed by the principal investigators.

Curriculum Overview

The Technology Education curriculum at the Sullivan school is designed to promote the study of communications, transportation, power and energy, manufacturing, construction and engineering by providing a wide variety of critical thinking and problem solving activities. Students will work to develop the scientific process and inquiry skills of predicting, hypothesizing, experimenting, inferring, collecting data and analysis. Cooperative learning and learn by doing is the foundation of these activities.

5th Grade - Communications Systems - MicroWorlds computer animation - computer graphics and multimedia communications presentations - Communications word processing  - History and impacts of Transportation Technology  - Introduce the Four Technological Systems (emphasizing the Transportation System Model), the Seven Technological Resources, and the three Xport methods (land, sea & air). Investigate alternative sources consisting of Hydropower, Bio Mass, Solar Power, Nuclear Power, Wind Power and WebQuests.

6th Grade - Communications – Simple Machines - Electricity and Magnetism - Bridges and Arches - Forces and structures physical science - mathematics - power and energy, measurement systems - Lego Dacta Technic II curriculum of complex machines. Hands-on learning activities in physical science include power and energy, communications and transportation systems and WebQuest.

7th Grade - Communications CADD (computer aided drafting and design) – World of Construction – Manufacturing - data collecting, spreadsheets - word processing - charts and graphs. Measurement systems - Power & Energy - Introduce the four types of energy (Mechanical, Thermal, Nuclear, and Electro/Magnetic) their production, distribution, and use. Manufacturing, tools and materials, machines and processes - Custom Production methods - student self directed learning approach problem solving - flow charts - production process. History and impacts of Energy Technology, Computer graphics generations in design and WebQuests.

8th Grade - Communications authoring with HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) web page development - digital photography - word processing - spreadsheets - computer graphics - graphs and charts multimedia communications presentations. Transportation Communications - Physical Science - Mathematics - Power and Energy - Measurement Systems - Computer Graphics generations in design. CADD (computer aided drafting and design) - data collecting - spreadsheets charts and graphs - study of aerodynamics and propulsion and WebQuests.
